Edge of the Sword

Ride your horse along the edge of the sword

Hide yourself in the middle of the flames

Blossoms of the fruit tree will bloom in the fire

The sun rises in the evening

-Zen Koan

The Zen tradition speaks in paradox because truth lives beyond language. To ride along the sword's edge is to walk the impossible line between opposites—danger and grace, destruction and creation. Perhaps to hide in flames is to discover that what should consume us can also illuminate.
